André Rosado

André is an interdisciplinary biologist working as a University Lecturer in the Department of Plant Breeding at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). He is specialised in global policies and legal frameworks governing biodiversity, genetic resources and sustainable agriculture. André holds a Master of Science in Sustainable Development from KU Leuven and a Master of Laws in Environmental Law and Management from Aberystwyth University. Before joining SLU, André worked for nearly seven years within the United Nations system, supporting capacity-building programmes on biodiversity and biotechnology governance in the Global South.
 

Project at IAS-STS: Exploring challenges and opportunities under international intellectual property frameworks for underutilized crops: A focus on pea, rye and chickpea
Pea, rye, and chickpea are underutilised crops whose full potential has yet to be realised. Underutilized crops cover indigenous species, landraces, and traditional varieties forming part of a broader agrobiodiversity portfolio, often overlooked for, inter alia, social or economic reasons. Typically grown by small-scale farmers in diverse systems worldwide, these crops are nutritionally rich and can support food security, climate adaptation, and reduced reliance on monocultures. Their development is influenced by legal and regulatory frameworks, particularly those linked to intellectual property. This project will assess how three international environmental agreements, including the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants, the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing, and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, shape the development and protection of underutilised crops, using pea, rye, and chickpea as case studies. It will analyse relevant intellectual property provisions under international law and conduct a literature review to identify opportunities and gaps, and propose recommendations to strengthen intellectual property protection. This project is funded by the COST Action CA22146 “Harnessing the potential of underutilized crops to promote sustainable food production” DIVERSICROP, and it will be conducted under the supervision of Prof. Armin Spök.
