Peyerl, Drielli | Brasilia

Drielli Peyerl is a young investigator and lecturer at the Institute of Energy and Environment and the Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation, University of São Paulo. She graduated in history and geography and completed her master’s degree in territory management at the State University of Ponta Grossa. She has her PhD in sciences at the University of Campinas. She currently coordinates the project Transitions in the History of Energy: Development and New Perspectives on Natural Gas in Brazil, financed by FAPESP. As a full-time researcher over the last years, she has built a strong background in energy transition, oil industry, science and technology studies, sustainable and energy policy. Her work is addressed to understand the electricity, industrial and transport sectors applied to the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources, alternatives fuels, low-carbon technologies, mapping socio-technical networks, and formulation of integrated frameworks for developing countries according to the 2030 Agenda and Paris Agreement. She supervises graduate and undergraduate students and coordinates the research group Brazil Energy Transition. Her books include The Oil of Brazil (2019), History, Exploration & Exploitation of Oil and Gas (2019), and Opportunities and Challenges of Natural Gas and Liquefied Natural Gas in Brazil (2020).

Project at IAS-STS: Alternatives fuels as strategies for a sustainability transition

Summary of the project: The proposal aims to discuss strategies for a sustainable transition that developing countries have adopted through their government policies to replace fossil fuels with alternative fuels in the transport sector. Some themes such as technology transfer, innovation, international agreements and national policies, and local development complement this analysis. As case studies, Latin American countries, especially Brazil, will be the focus of the discussion. Brazil, for example, has stood out for developing ethanol as an alternative fuel. However, the ineffectiveness of public and environmental policies in the transport sector has been challenging to achieve the international targets for decarbonization of the sector. Furthermore, when discussing a sustainable transition in Brazil in this sector, it is necessary to consider regional issues due to its territorial dimension.
