Project at IAS-STS: Open Innovation Strategies for the Food Industry – Platforms for enabling learning in complexity through scalable niche interactionsResearch predicts that global demand for food is expected to increase for at least another 40 years owing to continuing population and consumption growth, leading to increased competition for land, water, and energy. Additionally, the effects of climate change are an increasing threat. Environmental issues linked to ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss, and deterioration of soil productivity, are further compounded by excessive use of fertilizer and pesticides that have also been linked to growing healthcare concerns. Lastly, the reduction of emissions owing to food supply chains and industrial scale agriculture are high on the list of priorities governments globally. While these are complex challenges, they also present potential opportunities for innovations capable of tackling issues that threaten food security, and leverage digital platforms to create globally linked strategies for building open innovation systems through extensive knowledge networks.
