Project at IAS-STS: New approaches towards strengthening sustainable consumption
The research aims to explore dependencies between consumption patterns oriented around sustainable values and the degree of involvement with subsistence. It builds on the observation that people practicing subsistence, DIY and home production often pursue a live style that is oriented around sustainable principles. This observation could already be verified in a pilot study. It allowed to devise the thesis that subsistence brings out and advances patterns of sustainable consumption.
Building on this, the research focuses on analysing and systematically mapping motivational structures and institutional settings strengthening sustainable consumption patterns. The level of involvement with subsistence is considered an important explaining factor for why people actually practice sustainable consumption. On the basis of the findings generated in the research, strategies will be suggested to promote sustainable patterns of individual consumption more widely throughout society.
